Vision

The basic skills of mathematics are vital for the life opportunities of our children. Our vision is to enable all pupils with the knowledge, skills and understanding to think mathematically, enabling them to reason, solve problems and apply their knowledge to new situations.

Our vision is to develop a 'can do' attitude in maths, especially when problem solving and to broaden children's knowledge and understanding of how mathematics is used in the wider world by making rich and varied real life connections.

What does maths look like in our school?

At St Botolph’s Maths is an integral part of our daily curriculum.  We try to make maths creative and link to essential everyday life, e.g. through science, technology and showing how maths can be linked to most forms of employment.  We aim for all our pupils to become fluent in basic maths at a level that is appropriate for them.  In lessons we like to use a range of resources to support this including practical resources.  We like to use ICT in maths and we now use TT Rock stars in Key Stage 2 so pupils can challenge themselves and others while learning their times tables.

We aim to ensure that all pupils:

  • Become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics
  • Are able to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
  • Can use reasoning skills to follow a line of enquiry.
  • Can justify their thoughts using mathematical language.
  • Can solve problems by breaking them down.
  • Can solve problems by persevering in seeking solutions.

Maths Inspire Morning

We invited parents to come and take part in a maths lesson across school, they took part in many different types of activities, including problem solving and reasoning.  Some staff did maths lessons to show parents how we teach different areas of maths.  Parental feedback was very positive and parents enjoyed learning how we teach maths and having their own brains challenged.

Parents gave feedback too:

'Great morning, loved the chance to work with my child!'

'Great to see how my child learns in maths'
